If you have human children, you likely know the unparalleled, mesmerizing power of handing an exhausted toddler an iPad. In our house, we don't have human toddlers, but we do have Billy and Lizzie. And handing them a high-quality dog chew is the exact canine equivalent of putting a tablet in front of a kid.

It results in instant silence. Pure, unblinking focus. Uninterrupted peace for at least thirty glorious minutes.

But if you have ever walked down the treat aisle at a pet store, you know that finding the right "distraction" can be incredibly overwhelming. There are so many shapes, smells, and questionable animal parts that it is hard to know what is actually safe, healthy, and appropriate for your specific dog.

Let’s break down the wonderful, sometimes slightly gross, and highly effective world of dog chews so you can pick the perfect treat for your best friend.

The Classics (And The Controversial)

  • Rawhide: Let's address the elephant in the room right away. For decades, traditional rawhide was the go-to dog chew. Today, the pet industry is largely moving away from it. Traditional rawhide is heavily chemically processed, difficult for dogs to digest, and poses a major risk for severe intestinal blockages. We highly recommend skipping it.
  • Bully Sticks: The undisputed gold standard of dog chews. Made from 100% beef muscle (specifically, ahem, the pizzle), these are single-ingredient, highly digestible, and fantastic for scraping plaque off teeth. Yes, some of them smell a little funky, but the 45 minutes of silence they provide is well worth it.
  • Pig Ears: A nostalgic favorite. These are rich, packed with cartilage, and highly palatable. Because they are a bit softer, they don't last as long as a bully stick, and they are slightly higher in fat, making them a great "once in a while" special reward.

The Weird But Wonderful (Organ & Tendon Chews)

Dogs are natural scavengers, which means the weirder the body part, the more they are going to love it.

  • Gullet Sticks: Made from beef esophagus, these are a fantastic, slightly softer alternative to bully sticks. Because they are naturally packed with glucosamine and chondroitin, they are the ultimate chew for senior dogs with stiff joints or teething puppies with sensitive gums.
  • Bladder Discs: Yes, it sounds gross to us. To a dog, it is a Michelin-star dessert. The absolute genius of the bladder disc is its shape. Because it is a flat, round disc of stretched beef bladder, dogs cannot easily gulp it down. The shape forces them to hold it in their paws and actively chew the edges.
  • Jerky: Whether it is beef, turkey, or fish, jerky is the perfect high-value, quick-reward chew. It won't keep them busy for an hour, but it is a fantastic tool for training or a light afternoon snack.

The Heavy Duty: Antlers

  • Elk & Deer Antlers: If you have a relentless power chewer who destroys a bully stick in four minutes flat, antlers are usually the next step. They last seemingly forever, they are packed with calcium, and they don't splinter like cooked bones.
  • The Drawback: Because antlers are incredibly dense and hard, they do carry a risk of fracturing a dog's teeth if they bear down on them at the wrong angle with too much force. We only recommend these for appropriate chewers—if your dog is the type to try and snap a chew in half rather than gnaw on it, skip the antlers.

Chew Safety 101: Rules of Engagement

No matter what chew you choose, there are three golden rules every pet parent needs to follow:

  1. Always Supervise: Never hand your dog a chew and leave the house to run errands. You always want to be in the room just in case they accidentally swallow a piece the wrong way.
  2. Beware the "Nub": Once your dog works a chew down to a small, two-inch piece (the "nub"), it officially becomes a choking hazard. When it gets small enough to be swallowed whole, trade them for a different high-value treat and throw the nub in the garbage.
  3. Hydration Station: Chewing is hard work, and dried treats make dogs thirsty. Always make sure they have a bowl of fresh water nearby.
